Bedford man travels to Malaysia to
teach burgeoning martial art

Dwight Werner is embarking on a great adventure.
The owner of Monroe Martial Arts is in Kuala Lumpur for a 12-day trek through the Malaysian countryside teaching martial arts.
As an instructor of Choi Kwang Do, he will teach the martial
art alongside founder Grand Master Kwang Jo Choi
and spread the style through the area.
"I will be like an ambassador for Choi Kwang Do," the Bedford Township man said.
The trip comes as a means of expanding Choi Kwang Do into new regions beyond the 40 countries in which the martial art already is practiced. It is part of a group of seminars that take place in areas such as New York, Jamaica and New Zealand.
Mr. Werner will be one of 15 instructors leading seminars and training with the grand master as the traveling camp winds through Malaysian villages. The teachers come from all parts of the United States, England, Nepal and Singapore, though he will
be the only one from Michigan.
He said the trip would not only be a chance to train with the grand master but also to show the martial art to others.
"This is a great opportunity to demonstrate these techniques," he said. "Choi Kwang Do is spreading like wildfire in some of these areas."
Mr. Werner, a fourth-degree black belt in Choi Kwang Do, has been practicing the art since 1988 and teaches it in his N. Monroe St. center. The grand master is his teacher.
Though it's his first trip to Malaysia, he said he has prepared himself for the experience.
"I've been reading up about the area, and I've had all my shots," he said.
Kuala Lumpur, the capital of the largely Muslim country, is a bustling metropolis of 28 million people. The surrounding area is roughly two-thirds jungle, an area where the group will focus its efforts in switching people over from Tae Kwon Do, Mr. Werner said.
However, he said recent reports have advised the group not to venture into the eastern peninsula of the country, where a terrorist group linked to al-Qaeda has kidnapped visitors. Warnings have been put out about the region to American travelers.
The potential danger hasn't deterred Mr. Werner from the mission of spreading Choi Kwang Do, though.
"It's a little scary," he said. "But we'll be staying away from those eastern sections and protecting ourselves."
