Ranges of Self-Defense

A student should be efficient in all ranges of self-defense. If you are a serious martial artist, you have to be well rounded. The modern fighter must be skilled in:

#1. Stand-up
.....a. Long Range
.....b. Close Range

#2. Grappling

Stand-up: Long Range

The first range of fighting is Long Range . This is the mode of combat before you clinch. Long Range
consists of stance, movement, strikes, defense, and combinations. Your primary goal is the knockout.
The knockout is the most definitive finish.

Stand-up: Close Range

The second range of fighting is Close Range. Close Range is the mode of combat after you clinch but
are still standing. The way you set up the clinch will determine your ability to control your opponent.
Close Range
consists of the clinch, strikes, shoots, throws, takedowns, and defense. Your primary goal
is a knockout, or a devastating takedown. If you do get the takedown, it is important to end in a control
position to set up for the finish.

Grappling

The third range of fighting is Grappling. Grappling is the mode of combat after you hit the floor.
Grappling consists of positions, strikes, submissions, escapes, transitions and defense. In this mode
of combat your primary goal is a knockout, escape, or submission. These can only be obtained if you
first control the fight by obtaining a strong and dominant position. If you don't have control, you
will not be able to set up for the finish.
